Everything You’ll Need To Set Up Your Own Electronics Lab

If you love getting creative with tech, then you’ll have always dreamt of having your very own electronics lab.

From adapting computers and building little switchboards to even making your own logic probe, there are so many exciting things you can do. But, you don’t have to build a whole new place and get fancy equipment to have your own.

In fact, you could create one in your very own home with a few essential tools.

Finding the Spot

Firstly, you’ll need to find the perfect place to have your own lab.

If you have a spare bedroom, this is perfect, but if not, then maybe an attic, basement or even a garage. All you have to remember is, you’ll need to have plenty of space to store all your bits, make your projects and then store them later.

What you’ll need

Once you’ve got the perfect spot, the next stage is to ensure you have everything to make those projects.

There are many tools that you’ll need when setting up your own electronics lab. You can purchase most of these in places such as RS Components. But, the key things you’ll need are:

Multimeter

These are measurement tools and an absolute necessity as you’ll need one when it comes to troubleshooting your circuits and ensuring wires aren’t faulty.

Soldering station

Another necessity, you’ll need one of these to ensure you can build the circuits you intend on building.

Soldering accessories

Again, these will need to be purchased to go alongside the station. The accessories you’ll need will all depend on what it is you’re building.

Bench power supply

You may not need it, but a bench power supply could be really useful when it comes to your projects, and a really practical tool when it comes to circuits, as you can power them and test them before they’re finished.

Oscilloscope

Another great tool, these are used for debugging and also helping you to better understand the circuits that you build. However, these can be expensive, so shop around and maybe opt for the cheaper more basic ones, as these will have the functions you’ll require for home projects.

Wire stripper

A basic necessity, no electronics lab should be without one of these items.

Needle nose pliers and wire cutter

Not essential. But always handy to have by your side, these will help you get into those fiddly corners.

Hot glue gun

A great device to have to hand, you’ll be able to work on multiple projects with these, as they are perfect for sticking so many different things together.

Precision screwdriver set

Allowing you to work on projects of all sizes, the fact these all have different shaped heads means you’ll be able to tackle anything at any time.

Tweezers

Ideal for manipulating small components, make sure you get ones with an extremely small and pointed tip.

Of course, you can purchase a number of kits too, which feature a selection of pieces you can use when setting up your own lab. But, by following everything we’ve mentioned above, you should be on your way to building that perfect lab, and then on to building those amazing projects.

From adapting computers and building little switchboards to even making your own logic probe, there are so many exciting things you can do. But, you don’t have to build a whole new place and get fancy equipment to have your own.
