So, you’re about to go live and share something awesome with your followers, but you’re worried about all those comments. Maybe you’ve experienced this before – you’re trying to focus on your content, but the chat is just going crazy. It’s like trying to have a conversation in a really noisy room!
Well, you have the power to control this situation. Whether you’re a content creator, a business owner, or just someone who loves connecting with friends on Instagram, you can decide how you want your livestream to go.
Want to keep the conversation flowing? Great! Need some quiet time to focus on your message? You can do that too!
In the next few minutes, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to hide those chats if you need to. We’ll cover everything from why you might want to do this, to the step-by-step process of making it happen.
Why hide chats on Instagram Live?
You know how it goes – you’re in the middle of your live stream, sharing something awesome, and suddenly, your screen is flooded with comments. It happens, right?
1. Spam can be a real mood killer. Picture this: You’re excitedly talking about your latest project, and out of nowhere, your chat fills up with random messages or ads. Hiding the chat can help you keep your focus where it belongs – on your amazing content.
2. Negative comments can really throw you off your game. You’re feeling great, vibing with your audience, and then bam! A not-so-nice comment pops up. It can really knock the wind out of your sails, can’t it? By turning off the chat, you’re creating your own little bubble of positivity. No bad vibes allowed in your space!
3. Too many questions can be overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome that people are engaged and want to interact with you. But when you’ve got a ton of folks firing questions at you non-stop, it can feel like you’re in a rapid-fire quiz show. Hiding the chat gives you a chance to breathe and deliver your message without feeling like you need to answer a million questions at once.

How to hide chat when watching live on Instagram?
Now, let’s flip the script. What if you’re the viewer and you want to hide the chat?
If you are watching live on your phone
I hate to tell it but Instagram’s mobile app doesn’t let viewers hide comments during live streams. I know, it’s a bummer. But, we can’t do anything in that.
If you are watching live on your computer
- Switch to your PC or Mac.
- Open Google Chrome.

- Search for “Instagram Chrome extension”.
- Add the extension to your browser.
- Find the extension in your Chrome toolbar.
- Make sure the ‘IG Stories for Instagram‘ feature is turned on.
- Now, Go to Instagram.com and open your account.
- Navigate to the profile that’s streaming.
- Click on their live video to start watching.
- Look for the ‘Hide Comments‘ option at the top right of your screen.
- Click it to enjoy a distraction-free viewing experience.
That’s it! You now have a clear view of the live stream without any comments. If you want to see the comments again, just click the same option to bring them back.
Why are my comments off on Instagram Live?
Now, if you ever jumped into a live session only to find the comments are off, don’t worry, it’s not always your fault.
1. The host might have turned off the comments. Sometimes, the person running the livestream decides they want no comments. Maybe they need to stay focused, or they’re avoiding negativity. Remember, it’s their show, their rules.
2. The live may be having too much spam. As we discussed, if a live video is getting bombarded with spam or mean comments, Instagram might step in and mute the chat. It’s like a virtual bouncer keeping the party clean.
3. Rule-breaking. If comments in a live video are crossing the line – like being offensive or bullying – Instagram might shut them down.
What if you’re the host, and your comments have disappeared?
If you’re the one going live and your comments have vanished, here’s what you can do:
1. Check your settings. Dive into your account settings and make sure Live comments are enabled.
2. Reach out to Instagram. If you think there’s been a misunderstanding, contact Instagram’s support team. They’re like the guidance counselors of social media. If your life is having too many spam comments or breaking any sort of rules, Instagram does this, actually.
How to report inappropriate comments during a livestream?
If you are the viewer watching a live stream of someone else and feeling like the live is full of inappropriate comments. I know you cant do much about it. But you can report them.
- When you see a nasty comment, press and hold on to it.
- Tap the “Report Comments” option that pops up.

- You’ll need to tap “Report” again to confirm.
- If Instagram asks for more info, go ahead and share. The more they know, the better they can handle it.

After you’ve reported a comment, Instagram will review it and take appropriate action if it violates their guidelines.
