Are you looking to update the name that appears on your Gmail messages? You’ve come to the right place.
In this article, you’ll learn how to easily change your Gmail display name. This is the name that recipients see when they get an email from you. It’s different from your email address, which stays the same.
Whether you’ve gotten married, prefer to use a nickname, or just want a change, updating your Gmail name is a simple process. Let’s walk through the steps together to give your email a fresh identity.
Difference Email Display Names and Email Addresses
When you send an email, two things identify you to the recipient:
Display Name: This is the name that shows up when you send an email. For example, if your display name is “Steve from TechImpose,” that’s what your recipients see in their inbox.
Email Address: This is your actual email address, like “steve@techimpose.com”.
Now, if you can’t remember your display name or email address, you can easily check:
- Go to “Settings“
![]()
- Click on “See all Settings“

- Select “Accounts and Import”

- Look under “Send email as“

Now, in the next steps I will show you how to change your Gmail display name and your Google Account name. Also, I wanna tell you that changing your Gmail address isn’t usually possible. There are some special circumstances where you might be able to, but it’s generally not an option. We’ll explain more about this later in the article.
How to Change Your Gmail Display Name
Want to change the name that appears when you send emails? Here’s how you can do it:
- Open Gmail and log into your account
- Click on “Settings” in the top right corner
![]()
- Select “See all settings“

- Go to the “Accounts and Import” tab

- Find “Send mail as” and click “Edit info“

- Type in the new name you want to use

- Click “Save changes” to confirm

You’ve just updated your Gmail display name. The next time you send an email, recipients will see your new name.
Now, you need to know something else well. Sometimes, you might run into issues when trying to change your name. Here’s why that might happen:
- If you use Gmail for work, your company might have rules against changing names to prevent misuse.
- If you’ve changed your name several times recently, you may need to wait 24 to 48 hours before trying again.
- You can only change your display name on a computer, not through the Gmail app on your phone.
- If someone has saved you in their contacts under a different name, they’ll still see that name instead of your new one.
How To Change Your Google Account Name?
Your Google Account name appears across various Google services, including Gmail, YouTube, and Drive. If you want to change it, you can do so easily and as often as you like. Here’s how:
- Sign in to your Google Account

- Click on “Personal info“

- Under “Basic info“, find “Name” and click on it.

- Then again click on your Name.

- Update your first name, last name, or both

- Click “Save” to confirm your new name

That’s it! You’ve now changed your Google Account name. If you still see your old name, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies to see the update.
If you want to confirm if it has changed or not, I will suggest you just sign in to your main Gmail account and hover your mouse over your profile picture in the top right corner. Your current name will appear there.
How To Change Your Gmail Username or Email Address?
Once you’ve set up a Gmail address, it’s usually permanent. Google doesn’t typically allow changes to your actual email address, with very few exceptions. But don’t worry – you’re not completely stuck with your old address. There are some creative solutions you can try.
You can try this method, but keep in mind it usually doesn’t work:
- Log in to your Google Account
- Click on “Personal info“

- Go to “Contact info” and select “Email“

- Click “Edit” under “Google Account email“
- Try entering a new email address and click “Save“

More often than not, Google will tell you, “You can’t change this address.” If this happens, don’t be discouraged. There are other options.
You can try adding an Alias. This lets you send emails from a new address while keeping your original account active. It’s a great way to use a new address without creating an entirely new account.
Or, Create a New Gmail Address. If all fails, what are we left with? You can set up a new Gmail account and forward all emails from your old address to the new one. This way, you won’t miss any messages sent to your old address.
How To Choose The Right Email Name?
Now that you know how to change your email display name, let’s talk about how to choose the best one. Your display name is the first thing people see when they get an email from you, along with the subject line. It’s important because it helps recipients decide whether to open your email or not.
When someone sees your email, they’re likely thinking:
- Is this a real person or company?
- Do I know them?
A good display name builds trust and makes people more likely to open your emails.
Keep It Short. Try to keep your display name under 20-25 characters. This ensures it won’t get cut off in most email clients.
You Can Create Popular Email Display Name Formats:
Company Name. Using your company name is straightforward and builds brand recognition. For example, if your company is “BitofGeek” you could use “BitofGeek” or “The BitofGeek Team” as your display name.
First Name at Company. Adding a personal touch can be as simple as including your first name before the company name. For example, “Steve from BitofGeek.” This format suggests the email is from a real person, which can improve engagement.
Full Name. Using your full name works well if you’re the face of your brand. This is great for:
- Personal communications
- Thought leaders or influencers
- Freelancers
